How to Make Lettuce-Wrapped Squid Fritters – Crispy and Refreshing Korean Dish

If you've ever wondered how to make crispy and delicious lettuce-wrapped squid fritters at home, you're in for a treat! This refreshing Korean dish, originally popular in the Jeolla Province, combines crunchy squid fritters with fresh lettuce leaves and a tangy seasoned soy sauce.

A few years ago, I tried to visit Namdo Bunshik at Susongdong Valley near Inwangsan to taste their famous lettuce fritters. Unfortunately, both times I was unlucky and couldn't try them. Feeling a bit disappointed, I decided not to go back for a while.

But guess what? I finally decided to make lettuce-wrapped squid fritters at home—and they turned out absolutely fantastic! ๐Ÿ˜„

How to Make Lettuce-Wrapped Squid Fritters – Crispy and Refreshing Korean Dish

Ingredients for Lettuce-Wrapped Squid Fritters

For the Fritters:

  • 2 fresh squids (์˜ค์ง•์–ด)

  • 1/2 carrot (๋‹น๊ทผ)

  • 1 bunch of perilla leaves (๊นป์žŽ)

  • 1 onion (์–‘ํŒŒ)

  • Frying powder (ํŠ€๊น€๊ฐ€๋ฃจ)

  • Water (๋ฌผ)

For the Seasoned Soy Sauce:

  • Brewed soy sauce (์–‘์กฐ๊ฐ„์žฅ)

  • Water

  • Vinegar (์‹์ดˆ)

To Serve:

  • Fresh lettuce leaves (์ƒ์ถ” ์žŽ)

Optional:

  • Chopped green chili peppers (์ฒญ์–‘๊ณ ์ถ”) - for a spicy kick

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Vegetables: Slice the carrot into thin strips, chop the perilla leaves finely, and slice the onion thinly. If you enjoy a bit of heat, you can also add some chopped green chili peppers to the mix.

  2. Make the Batter: In a large bowl, combine the sliced carrots, chopped perilla leaves, onions, and optional green chilies. Add the frying powder and gradually mix in water until you have a well-combined, slightly thick batter.

  3. Heat the Oil: Heat cooking oil in a deep pan. To check if the oil is ready, drop a small bit of batter into the oil—if it rises within 2–3 seconds, the oil is perfect for frying.

  4. Fry the Fritters: Spoon small portions of batter into the hot oil. Since the fritters will be wrapped in lettuce, it’s best to keep them bite-sized. Fry until golden and crispy, then place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.

  5. Wrap and Enjoy: Take a fresh lettuce leaf, place a crispy squid fritter inside, and top it with a little seasoned soy sauce. The combination of crispy fritters, fresh lettuce, and savory sauce is simply irresistible!

My Secret to Simple & Tasty Steamed Crab

My Secret to Simple & Tasty Steamed Crab

I made and enjoyed adelicious spring treat: Steamed crab with bean sprouts.

My Secret to Simple & Tasty Steamed Crab
Refreshing steamed crab with bean sprouts

This is the steamed crab I made and ate tonight. Even though it's crab season, reasonably priced crabs were nowhere to be found at the market. ๐Ÿ˜ž

However, I made it with frozen crabs instead. Being frozen, it couldn't quite match the taste of fresh, leg-packed crabs,

But it was still enough to eat a delicious meal.

Here's a really simple steamed crab recipe!

A. Ingredients

1 pack of frozen crab (16,000 won) Bean sprouts (2,300 won worth) Onions, green onions, water parsley in small amounts 1 red pepper, 1 green pepper each Sesame seeds, minced ginger, minced garlic, green onions Soy sauce, red pepper powder Sesame oil, cooking oil

B. Recipe

  1. Steaming bean sprouts Put oil in a pot and add bean sprouts, onions, minced garlic and ginger, green onions, red pepper powder, and crab. Cover and steam.

(Do not season the bean sprouts before cooking. Why? Because seasoning them beforehand will cause them to become pickled. The bean sprouts will lose their moisture and become thin and tough. Season them after they are cooked!)

  1. Mix The bean sprouts will smell cooked and the crabs will turn red as they cook. If you wait a little while, the crabs will start to cook and give off a delicious smell.

Open the lid, add about 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, black pepper, and green onions (about 3-4 cm long), and mix while turning on the heat.

You can add more red pepper powder if necessary.

  1. Finally, Add sesame oil, mix, place in a bowl, and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Add sesame oil at the very end so that the flavor doesn't disappear, and don't add too much.
